Kalunga. the water archive. the earth archive. systems of communication. places of transition. states of becoming.
The performances Kalunga are inspired by the symbology of the word Kalunga, present in the Bakongo Cosmogram (Dikenga). Kalunga is a word from the Bantu languages (an ethno-linguistic group located mainly in sub-Saharan Africa) which means the sea, as well as the burial grounds. The Bakongo Cosmogram is a representation of a life path, between the human and spiritual worlds – like the cycle of the sun. The Bakongo Cosmogram (Dikenga) is present in many Afro-Brazilians traditions in Brazil and is incorporated as a cosmos – vision of the world in those traditions.
The concept is to update the meaning of the word Kalunga in now days in relation with the transatlantic slavery history and the Afro – diaspora that results from this journey throughout the sea.
It is a new path, a new journey inside of the history, the traces, the legacy of the memory and archive of this cosmo – vision that still alive above everything that have been silence concerning the slavery history. It is a claim of updating our body – memory that have been carrying those archives and express them in culture, symbols and way of living.
Those archives still alive and they are dynamic, working in a multiple perspective of time and co-existing as a resistance of survival. Through adapting, overlapping and re – creating in context and time.
